NLC insists on death for treasury looters

In from Ali Smart…

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reiterated that it wants capital punishment to be meted to corrupt public office holders in the country.

The labour union said it is convinced that death penalty rather than life imprisonment is in order.

The NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba spoke on Saturday in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital during his condolence visit to former NLC vice president, Issa Aremu on the death of his mother, Hafsat.

Addressing reporters, Wabba said: “We must canvass for capital punishment. It is only people who are stealing that will go against it. If we are campaigning for capital punishment and people are kicking against it, we must be consistent because people are reaping from where they have not sown. Except we begin to do the needful, it will be difficult to change our society.

“If you have followed up our argument, we have said clearly that part of why we are in this quagmire is that a lot of people have appropriated the resources that we need to drive development.”

Apparently discomfited that most corrupt public officers have had to circumvent the law in their favour, the NLC boss said no effort must be spared to deal with treasury looters.

“We are against the issue of plea bargaining because it will be an incentive to encourage treasury looters because the loot will be too much so that during the process of plea bargaining, they may just part with little,” Wabba said.

Expatiating, he said: “When you fight corruption, it will fight you back. Do not be surprised those canvassing that argument, they do not have substance in their argument outside that we should not take life out of people but they are taking life out of people. If the roads are bad and there are accidents and people die, they are already taking people’s lives. The fact is that corruption has killed a lot of people and we will stand by the truth and continue to advance what will help our country.”
