UN Security Council slaps fresh sanctions on defiant North Korea

Defiant North Korea led by headstrong leader Kim Jong Un seemed to have crossed the line days ago after it fired its sixth and largest missile over Japan as the UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a US-drafted resolution imposing new sanctions on the pariah nation.

The new sanction according to reports does not ban North Korea from importing all natural gas liquids and condensates but bars Pyongyang’s imports of crude oil at the level of the last 12 months, and it limits the import of refined petroleum products to 2 million barrels a year.

The decision to slap fresh sanctions on North Korea was reached after the council voted 15-0 on Monday to slap a ban on textile exports and restrict shipments of oil products to North Korea with the backing from China and Russia.

Two days ago, NATO head, Jens Stoltenberg labeled Pyongyang’s behaviour after it fired its sixth missile as “reckless”.

Speaking on Sunday while calling for a concerted international response to the isolated state’s recent nuclear and missile tests, Stoltenberg, the military alliance’s secretary-general said; “The behaviour of North Korea is a global threat and requires a global response, and that of course also includes NATO.”

Stoltenberg however declined to clarify NATO’s position on North Korea’s continued provocation, and instead stressed the need for a conflict-free resolution to the crisis on the Korean peninsula.
