COVID-19 PALLIATIVES: Nigerian govt lists info it’ll use to identify vulnerable Nigerians

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Sadiya Farouq , has disclosed that the list of information the Federal Government of Nigeria will access to identify poor and vulnerable Nigerians who would receive the Conditional Cash Transfer in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Farouq stated that government would deploy the use of BVN/Bank accounts and mobile phone records to identify such people.

Sadiya Farouq who disclosed this while responding to questions at the Presidential Task Force briefing on COVID-19 on Tuesday also noted that this digital measure would be faster and will make the distribution more effective.

“We are using other models including BVN to identify bank accounts. We are also using mobile phone networks to identify poor and vulnerable people in the society. This is going to be faster, transparent and give room for more accountability” she said

Her comments come after the United Nations (UN) announced that it received EUR 1.2 million from the European Union for the provision of lifesaving preparedness and response activities for COVID-19 in Nigeria.

This was revealed on Tuesday in Abuja by Mr Geoffrey Njoku, Communications Specialist, UNICEF Nigeria, who said that the support was due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria.

Njoku also added that concerns around the need to drastically scale-up public health preparedness and response informed the provision of humanitarian funding which would further the UN’s COVID-19 response in Nigeria.
