COVID-19: Worldwide infections reach 1.9m, as New York death toll reaches 10,000

COVID-19: Infection in the US surges past 100,000, as Zimbabwe orders total lockdown

Data recently compiled by Johns Hopkins University, USA, has revealed that no fewer than 1.92 million people around the world have now been confirmed to have the new coronavirus.

The figures also reveal that more than 119,500 have died of the deadly virus, while nearly 450,000 have recovered with the number of dead in New York state exceeding 10,000 as President Donald Trump tries to defend his coronavirus response which has received knocks in some quarters.

In a related development, the World Health Organisation (WHO) is due to release its latest strategic advice on tackling the outbreak. It will include six criteria for lifting restrictions on movement.

Meanwhile, confirmed new coronavirus continue to slow in Germany, where the Robert Koch Institute has just announced 2,082 more cases, bringing the total to 125,098.

It’s the fourth decline in the number of new cases after four days of increases.

A further 170 people died from the deadly coronavirus, RKI said on Tuesday morning.
