FIFA launches 'Best FIFA Football Awards' to rival Ballon d'Or

FIFA has confirmed the presidential election will go ahead as planned at an extraordinary congress on February 26.

There had been calls for the election to be postponed after FIFA president Sepp Blatter, UEFA president Michel Platini and FIFA general secretary Jerome Valke were suspended for 90-days amid corruption allegations.

The Executive Committee discussed the matter at its meeting on Tuesday and it was decided that the election would go ahead as planned.

“FIFA ExCo reconfirms 26 February 2016 as the date of the extraordinary elective congress in Zurich,” the sport’s world governing body tweeted.

Platini has been suspended while FIFA carries out an investigation into a £1.35million payment he received from Blatter in 2011 for work carried out nine years previously.

The Frenchman is one of those hoping to succeed Blatter as president and he has already submitted his candidacy ahead of the October 26 deadline.

Prince Ali bin al-Hussein has already secured the five nominations to stand, while Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa of Bahrain is expected to declare his candidacy in the coming days.
