Military arrest N’Delta militants over pipeline attacks

The Nigerian military on Sunday arrested some suspected militants in the Niger Delta area suspected of having taken part recent attacks on some oil facilities in the region.

A senior military source with the joint task force in the region, told Reuters, that “We made some arrests over the weekend. They were picked up around scenes of recent attacks in the Niger delta.”

He also stated that “It will be pre-emptive at this stage to conclude that the suspects are the militants that bombed the oil pipelines and installations until after investigation”.

There has been growing concern over renewed activities of militants’ activities in the Niger Delta region, with a new group, the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) claiming responsibility for attacks on oil facilities in the area.

The group also threatened to attack anyone who attempts to carry out repair works on the damaged pipelines.

While the NDA has vowed to continue with the attacks, it also warned oil firms and businessmen of northern descent to leave the region.
