PHILIPPINES: Entire city police force fired over gruesome killings, robbery

A massive purge involving an entire city police force in the Philippines will soon be carried out in batches after some cops were suspected to be involved in the gruesome killings of three teenagers while some others were caught on camera robbing a house.

According to metropolitan Manila police chief Oscar Albayalde, the 1,200-strong Caloocan city police force will be relieved in batches and replaced as soon as possible.

Last week, security-camera video purportedly showed 13 policemen robbing a house during an alleged drug raid.

Reports also reveal that investigations have also begun into the murder and torture of 17-year-old student Kian Delos Santos during an anti-drug raid last month by four Caloocan policemen.

The parents of two other teenagers – 19-year-old Carl Angelo Arnaiz and 14-year-old Reynaldo de Guzman – have also filed murder, torture and planting of evidence complaints against two Caloocan policemen.

President Rodrigo Duterte’s crackdown on drugs, which has left thousands of suspects dead, has come under renewed scrutiny since police shot Delos Santos.

Duterte said the country’s drug problem has become a national security threat saying he does not intend to declare martial law, but added that his controversial war against illegal drugs will continue.
