Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has announced plans to launch a security outfit aimed at eliminating beggars and criminals from Abuja’s streets.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony for upgrading the War College/army checkpoint and ancillary roads in Bwari area council on Monday, Wike emphasized the need to restore the city’s dignity.

On October 22, Wike issued a stern warning to beggars and scavengers, describing their presence as “embarrassing” and ordering their evacuation within a week. He cited security concerns, noting that beggars could be disguised criminals or informants.

“We’re launching another security scheme on Friday to ensure the city is rid of unwanted elements,” Wike declared. “Stay in your state and beg. FCT cannot be the center of beggars. It’s the only city we have to showcase to the world; we won’t allow that.”

Wike clarified that begging is not inherently good, stating, “If you want to beg, go to village areas, but leave the city. The city must be clean. We’re ready for the criminals.”
