Monkeypox spreads to Abuja as 6 new cases recorded across states
Six new cases of the monkeypox virus have been confirmed including a first case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The Minister of State for Health, Osagie Ehanire, made this disclosure in Abuja on Friday.
Ehanire said apart from Abuja, there were two new cases of the disease in Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom states and one in Enugu.
With the new additions, the total number of confirmed monkeypox cases is now nine.
The minister said investigations were ongoing to see if any of the new cases had any link with the Bayelsa cluster where the outbreak started.

Ehanire said the newly affected monkeypox patients were already being managed by public health authorities and had been receiving appropriate care since their diagnosis.
He said the ministry of health, through the disease control office, was in contact with all state epidemiology teams, as well as the health facilities providing clinical care to both suspected and confirmed cases.
Ehanire added that the state commissioners of health had also been advised to place all health care facilities and disease surveillance and notification officers on alert, to ensure early case detection, reporting and effective treatment.
He said no death had been recorded in the outbreak of the disease.
It will be recalled however that a monkepox patient quarantined in a facility in Bayelsa State had died, with officials saying he committed suicide.

Nigeria isn’t an advanced country, we’re still developing and rightly stated as an underdeveloped country. Our medical system in Nigeria isn’t proactive, we wait until an outbreak get serious before acting.
