Gov Okowa says death penalty no longer fashionable

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may not have gotten favourable rulings from the Governorship Election Petition Tribunals in Akwa Ibom and Rivers states, but it has been favoured in Delta, but lost out in Plateau state again.

In Delta State, the governorship election tribunal sitting in Asaba, the state capital threw out the petition by the Labour Party and its governorship candidate, Great Ogboru, against the PDP, and it governorship candidate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa.

The three-man tribunal’s chairman, Justice Nasiru Gunmi, said the petition lacked merit and upheld the election of the Okowa and also awarded a cost of N50, 000 to each of the respondents, namely, Okowa, the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) and the PDP.

Also in Plateau State, the tribunal affirmed the victory of Governor Simon Lalong in the April 11 governorship poll.

Gyang Pwajok of the PDP and his party had dragged Lalong of the All Progressives Congress (APC) before the tribunal.

The PDP claimed that there were cases of irregularities during the polls, asking the panel to nullify the election and declare Pwajok as winner.

The tribunal, which ruled on the petition in Jos, the Plateau State capital, dismissed the petitioners’ petition for lack of merit.

Security operatives earlier barred journalists from entering the court room, saying they were acting on the orders of the panel.
