UCL: Juve, United, Roma secure round of 16 spots; Atletico crash out

Serie A champions, Juventus secured a spot in the round of 16 of the Uefa Champions League on Tuesday after the final Group D game at the expense of Sporting Lisbon.

Premier League giants, Manchester United and FC Basel won the two available tickets in group A, while Italian side AS Roma joined Chelsea from Group C into the next round.

Juventus had a 0-2 victory at Olympiakos which was enough for the second place behind group winners FC Barcelona.

Barca closed the group stage with a 2-0 win over Sporting CP who finished third and are set to join the Europa League.

In group A, the Red Devils defeated CSKA Moscow 2-1 at Old Trafford to emerge group winners, while FC Basel secured a 2-0 away win at Benfica Lisbon to claim second spot.

CSKA Moscow, with nine points, will drop to the Europa League next year while Benfica are out after losing all six matches in the group.

Elsewhere, Chelsea missed out on top spot in Group C after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge.

Roma, who defeated Qarabag 1-0 at home, leaped to top spot and secured qualification for the round of 16, leaving Atletico in third place.

In Group B, Bundesliga leaders, Bayern Munich beat visiting Paris St-Germain 3-1, although both teams had already qualified for the knockout stage.

Scottish champions, Celtic secured Europa League spot despite losing 1-0 to Anderletch in the final group game; they had a better head-to-head record having beaten the Belgian side 3-0 in their first meeting.

    I already told Diego Simeon to watch well if he wants to qualify for the second round, I said he should shift his focus from hurting Chelsea, which was the target he had set for himself…
