What is Fani-Kayode up to?

Published

Former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode is one politician who understands the back and forth movement in politics. He was a member of the PDP before he teamed up with members of the then opposition to form the APC.

He however returned the then ruling party after allegedly negotiating with former President Goodluck Jonathan for corrupt charges leveled against him by the EFCC to be dropped.

During his stint with the APC, he persistently lashed out at the PDP, accusing the party of playing up religious sentiments against the opposition party. He even at a time accused the ruling party of being behind the Boko Haram insurgent group.

But like most politicians who see politics as a game of interest rather than contest of principles, Fani-Kayode made a detour and returned to the PDP and those he earlier labeled Boko Haram sympathisers before the general elections.

He was rewarded with the position of Director of Media and Publicity of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation and a huge budget.

As expected, the same APC he glorified came under the receiving end of the verbal assault, which he is known for all through the general elections, particularly the presidential poll.

With the election won and lost, and the APC’s Muhammadu Buhari, who received most of Fani-Kayode’s verbal missiles, assuming power at the centre, the former minister seems to be on the move for a possible return to ruling camp.

Indication to this emerged at the weekend when Fani-Kayode called on lawmakers on the platform of the PDP in the House of Representative to vote for Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker.

Gbajabiamila, a member of the APC emerged candidate of the APC for the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the 8th Assembly. He polled 154 votes out of 182 votes to beat Yakubu Dogara in a primary conducted by APC chieftains.

He described the emergence of the Surulere, Lagos representative as a welcome development. “I am glad that Femi Gbajabiamila has emerged as the APC consensus candidate for Speaker of the House. I urge the PDP members to vote for him”, he wrote via his twitter handle.

The support could have been arrived at after a genuine assessment of the two gladiators for the speakership, but some analysts are of the view that it may be a ploy for Fani-Kayode to warm himself into the hearts of the new occupants of the Presidential Villa said to be behind Gbajabiamila.

As events unfold and politics being a game of the possible, only time will tell whether the vocal former minister will return to his political vomit.
