Court docks commercial driver for killing bride-to-be

34-yr-old pastor paraded in court for kidnapping, raping choir mistress

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court has ordered the detention of a commercial bus driver identified as Atake Benjamin, 52, who reportedly killed a bride-to-be, Destiny Yahaya.

Reports say on May 24, around 8.30pm on Kunle Akinosho Street, Oshodi, Lagos, Benjamin allegedly reversed his commercial bus with plate number KTU 823 XW, recklessly hitting his victim in the process.

Destiny was reportedly rushed to the hospital immediately after the incident which saw her sustain severe head injuries but she was confirmed dead moments after she arrived for medical attention.

Reacting to the incident, Destiny’s fiancé, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “My marriage to Destiny was supposed to take place in September.”

Benjamin who was paraded in court on two counts bordering on reckless driving and manslaughter, pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against him.

According to the prosecutor, the offences committed by Benjamin contravened sections 167(1) and 20 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2012.

Before adjourning the case till July 30 for further hearing, the magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties each in like sum, one of whom must be a blood relation.

Mrs Sule-Amzat also ordered that the case file be duplicated and sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
