D’Tigress set record with FIBA World Cup win over Turkey

Nigeria women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have become only the second African team to win a FIBA World Cup match after they triumphed over Turkey on Sunday.

The encounter was their second group game at the ongoing 2018 FIBA Women’s World Cup in the Santa Cruz de Tenerife court in Spain.

The Nigerian ladies had at the weekend lost 86-68 to Australia in their opening game, but sealed their first ever win by defeating Turkey 74-68 in the Group B encounter.

The coach Otis Hughley side trailed 15-7 in the first quarter to the Turks but bounced back strongly to win the second quarter 22-17.

They extended their lead by winning the third quarter, 23-10, before losing 22-26 in the fourth quarter, to seal the 74-68 scoreline.

Sarah Ogoke scored 22 points and four rebounds, while Evelyn Akhator bagged 13 points and ten rebounds.

As the race for quarterfinal spots continue, D’Tigress will take on Argentina in their next game on Tuesday and will hope to clinch their ticket to the knockout stages.
