Ailing Super Eagles goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme says he is more than devastated about missing the forthcoming FIFA 2018 World Cup, but wishes his teammates luck when they kick off their campaign in Russia.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers’ shot stopper, who stood as the Super Eagles’ first choice between the sticks, began the race to Russia with the team but got diagnosed with acute leukaemia after featuring in two games.

Ikeme thanked Nigerians for their support and prayers since the beginning of his ailment, saying he cannot explain how much the love meant to him.

The 31-year old tweeted on Friday: “To say I’m devastated about missing the World Cup is a understatement. But I just want to thank everyone in ?? for their prayers, love and messages. I can’t explain how much they mean to me❤️ I also want to wish my teammates, coaches and NFF luck for the summer coming ??❤️.”

Ikeme, who will be turning 32 a week from today, had been named as an honorary member of the Nigerian squad at the World Cup by team manager, Gernot Rohr.

“Until the last moment, there is a possibility of bringing in these players. Carl Ikeme will be our 24th player to the World Cup,” Rohr said this week.

Ikeme is also expected to play a ceremonial role in kick off when the Super Eagles face the Three Lions of England in a friendly at Wembley this weekend.

The Eagles face Croatia, Iceland and Argentina in Group D in Russia this summer.
