Herdsmen: 20,000 children forced out of school in Nasarawa

No fewer than 20,000 children in both primary and secondary schools have been reportedly forced out of school in Nasarawa State following persistent attacks by suspected AK47-wielding herdsmen on communities in the southern senatorial district of the state.

The attacks, which began in January this year, followed implementation of the Anti-Open Grazing Law in Benue State in border communities of Nasarawa and Benue, which later escalated in all Tiv communities in five local government areas of Awe, Keana, Obi and Doma in Nasarawa State.
In all, no fewer than 200,000 residents had been displaced in the various communities.

The development forced the government to open Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in primary schools in the state, forcing the children out of school.

A primary school pupil in one of the schools in Kadarko town of Keana Local Government said both public and private schools had been shut down in the area since the attacks on Tiv communities by marauding herdsmen began in January this year.

New Telegraph gathered that Tiv ethnic group, who were predominantly farmers, were reported to be one of the most affected, especially in Doma, Obi, Keana and Awe and Lafia council areas that were engulfed in the crisi.
