Kenyan cleric warns Nigerian youths against violent protests

Published

on

As Nigerian youths prepare to take to the streets tomorrow, activist cleric Bishop Wycliffe Khaemba has cautioned them against embracing violent protests, citing the devastating consequences of similar actions in Kenya.

Bishop Khaemba, who has spent 28 years in activism, urged Nigerian youths to learn from Kenya’s experience, where massive protests against tax hikes have resulted in widespread destruction of public infrastructure, loss of livelihoods, and disruption of education.

“We allowed ourselves to be led into violent protests and disturbances, thinking they would lead to a desired outcome. Unfortunately, they have resulted in an undesirable outcome,” Bishop Khaemba said in a statement on Tuesday.

Describing the gory consequences of the protests in Kenya, he stated: “Tens of thousands of small and medium-scale enterprises have been destroyed along with major public infrastructure, and people’s lives have been turned upside down.

”The education of our next generation has been affected, and we are not even back at square one. We are farther back.”

Bishop Khaemba advised Nigerian youths not to travel the same route, warning that it would not end well for them and the nation.

His words come as a timely warning, as Nigerians prepare to express their grievances against the government’s handling of the economy and insecurity.
