Senate canvasses death penalty for kidnappers

Commissioner of Lands in Kogi State, Mr. Steven Mayeki was on Sunday kidnapped by about five gunmen from his farm in Osara village, Adavi Local Government Area of the state.

An anonymous eyewitness said the gunmen stormed Mayaki’s farm in a Prado Jeep, abducted and drove him away to an unknown destination.

The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Adebayo Collins, confirmed the kidnap.

He added that the command was doing everything possible to rescue the commissioner unhurt.

He added that the incident occurred while the commissioner was on his land site in Osara, and that he was kidnapped with six other people on the site.

He said, “The kidnappers who wore masks, suddenly surfaced while he was settling a land dispute with some persons.

“The seven victims were taken to an unknown location and interviewed by their captors, who later released four of the victims and kept three others, the commissioner inclusive.

“The police is doing everything possible to ensure the safe release of all the three victims, while a thorough investigation is ongoing.”

It will be recalled that the Kogi State High Court Judge, Justice Samuel Obayomi, who was kidnapped last Monday had yet to be released. The judge’s orderly, Mr. Usman Musa, was shot dead in the encounter.

The kidnappers later demanded N150m ransom before they would release the judge.
