King Charles formally appoints Keir Starmer as UK Prime Minister
Labour leader Keir Starmer has been officially appointed as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom by King Charles III in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Friday.
A photo released by the palace captured the moment as the monarch shook hands with Starmer, marking the transition following his party’s decisive election win. Earlier, King Charles had accepted the resignation of Conservative leader Rishi Sunak.
“The King received in audience The Right Honourable Sir Keir Starmer MP today and requested him to form a new administration.
“Sir Keir accepted His Majesty’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury,” read a statement from the palace.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu also extended his congratulations to Starmer on his party’s electoral success in the UK general election.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu highlighted Starmer’s determination and leadership throughout his tenure as opposition leader and now as the head of government.
The President commended the Labour Party’s ability to reform, mobilize, and secure victory after 14 years, underscoring Starmer’s leadership qualities.
