Falana, Reps react to Melaye's ordeal

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday said that it was impressed with how Senator Dino Melaye has been representing his constituents at the Senate.

The party has therefore directed its members in Kogi West to vote against the recall of Melaye during the verification of signatures of petitioners holding on April 28.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had slated April 28 for the verification of signatures of the petitioners that signed for the recall of Melaye.

According to the electoral body, the verification is going to hold from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in 552 of 560 polling units in the seven local governments that make up Kogi West senatorial district.

But in its statement in Lokoja, the state capital, signed by its Director of Research and Documentation, Mr Dickson Achadu, the PDP said that it was in support of the senator’s agitation for good welfare for workers and the downtrodden.

Noting that efforts to recall Melaye was a product of an internal crisis in the All Progressives Congress (APC), the PDP regretted that Kogi State has been made a laughing stock.

While it called on its members to remain peaceful and law-abiding but refrain from submitting to intimidation and inducement by the sponsors of the recall, the party also cautioned INEC and security agencies to guard against being used in the plan to forcefully deny Kogi West quality representation at the senate.

This came just as the Police Command in the state has promised that the exercise would be peaceful and violence-free.

Aside the move to recall him, he is currently under arrest at the National Hospital Abuja, where he is being treated from injuries he sustained jumping out from a police vehicle to escape being transported to Kogi State to answer for alleged involvement in gunrunning and an alleged false assassination claim.
