PDP, INEC argue over postponement of Ondo election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disagreed over whether or not the Ondo State governorship election has to be postponed.

The PDP while reacting to the Appeal Court ruling on the case of who should be the candidate of the party called for the election of the polls, based on the crisis within the party.

Spokesperson of the Sen Ahmed Makarfi led faction of the party, Dayo Adeyeye who made the call, said there was no way INEC could conduct a credible election in Ondo state, with the candidature of his party still a legal contention.

But the electoral umpire contended that there is a legal time line for the process of the November 26 election which kicked off seven months ago, and that it can not be so easily called off.

According to the INEC spokesperson, Solomon Soyebi, the election is not under any threat, and can only be called off in the event of a natural disaster, violence or war.

He also noted that the 28 political parties taking part in the Ondo poll, including the PDP are dully represented in the ballot paper for the election, adding that the PDP legal logjam is a pre-election issue.

Recall that the court of Appeal had on Friday postponed the case on the PDP candidature indefinitely based on a petition to the Supreme Court by parties in the suit, who were complaining about the composition of the panel.

Justice Okon Abang of an Abuja Federal High Court had declared Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate of the PDP for the election, replacing Eyitayo Jegede, which sparked off the legal fireworks between the two factions of the party.

“According to the INEC spokesperson, Solomon Soyebi, the election is not under any threat, and can only be called off in the event of a natural disaster, violence or war.”

This sounds really assuring. PDP must learn to show some respect for election umpires!

The election cannot hold without PDP having full representation, the case in court must be finalized before INEC conducts the election in Ondo
