Suspected Boko Haram militants attack Geidam

Suspected Boko Haram militants on Wednesday launched an attack on the home town of Yobe State governor, Ibrahim Geidam.

The governor is named after the town.

According to terrified residents of of the town, sporadic gunshots were heard in the town, which is about 180 kilometers from the state capital, Damaturu and lies between Nigeria and the Republic of Niger.

A resident of the town disclosed that he noticed the movement of seven pick-up vans moving through the town. The trucks were believed to be conveying members of the terrorist group.

A resident said: “There had been ceaseless shooting. Everyone was indoors and no one can say exactly what is happening outside but I saw seven pick-up vans coming into the town from the direction of Niger Republic.”

Confirming the attack, Toyin Gbadegesin, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, said “the militants were making efforts to invade the town but security forces on ground are well in control of the situation”

It will be recalled that the violent Boko Haram sect had launched multiple suicide bomb attack on the state capital, Damaturu earlier on Wednesday, killing about 17 people and injuring several others.
