US rejects ICJ jurisdiction over sanctions imposed on Iran
A move by the International Court of Justice to rule on Iran’s demand for the suspension of fresh nuclear sanctions recently re-imposed on the country, has been rejected by the US.
US State Department lawyer Jennifer Newstead, argued that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague “lacks prima facie jurisdiction to hear Iran’s claims.”
Newstead added that her country has the right to protect its national security and other interests.

She said the treaty “cannot, therefore, provide a basis for this court’s jurisdiction” in the case.
Iran had earlier filed a lawsuit before the International Court of Justice seeking the nullification of re-imposed sanctions.
Iran argues that the re-imposed sanctions violate terms of a 1955 friendship treaty between the two countries accussing Washington of ‘naked economic aggression’.
