CHAMPION! Aruna Quadri makes history at ITTF Nigeria Open

Nigeria’s Table Tennis star, Aruna Quadri has emerged champion of the Men’s Singles event at the 2018 ITTF Challenge Nigeria Open.

He defeated Frenchman Antoine Hachard in the final on Sunday evening to become the first ever Nigerian to win the annual Challenge Series event in Lagos.

With a huge fan base cheering him up inside the Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Aruna came from behind twice to win 4-2.

The 27-year old won in six sets as follows: 11-13; 11-3; 8-11; 11-7; 11-5; 11-7.

Ranked 18th in the world, Aruna lived up to expectations as the no. 1 seed in the competition and the home favourite.

On receiving the title, he thanked the fans who were heavily behind him throughout the competition.

“If not for my fans that supported me all the way, this victory would not have been possible and so, I want to thank the people for standing by me,” he said.

The 2019 Nigeria Open will hold from August 7th to 11th, the Local Organizing Committee has revealed.

Meanwhile, the competition has been upgraded from a Challenge to a Challenge plus in the ITTF event ratings.

Hence, the prize money of the competition has been increased from $46,000 to $60,000.
