China enforces UN sanctions on North Korea, issues ultimatum to its companies

Asian giants China is tightening its noose on sanctions imposed on North Korea after ordering businesses owned by the pariah nation led by Kim Jong-Un to close by January.

China’s commerce ministry said on Thursday that companies, including joint ventures with Chinese firms, have 120 days to close from the date the UN resolution was adopted on September 11.

The move will witness the cutting of foreign revenue for Pyongyang under United Nations sanctions imposed over its continued provocative nuclear and missile programmes.

China’s move has seen the U.S. State Department urging sceptical members of the UN Congress not to rush to enact new sanctions on Pyongyang in order to give Beijing’s efforts a chance to take effect.

“We are working closely with China to execute this strategy and are clear-eyed in viewing the progress – growing, if uneven – that China has made on this front,” State Department Assistant Secretary Susan Thornton told a Senate hearing just before leaving for China with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
