Lagos govt sacks illegal occupants under Eko Bridge

The Lagos State government has dislodged occupants of 84 rooms constructed under the Eko Bridge at the Elegbata area of Lagos Island.

The Corps Marshall of the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), Maj. Olanini Cole (retd), disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday by the agency’s spokesman, Mr. Lukman Ajayi.

Cole said one person who allegedly built an eight-room toilet and linked the pipes to the Lagoon was also arrested during the operation.

He added that the operation followed an attack on a member of the public on the spot.

The Corps Marshall said: “The fellow petitioned the state Commissioner for Environment, who gave an order for the demolition of the illegal structures.

“Some of the evicted individuals have been living there for the past 30 years.

“It is interesting that eight toilet pipes were linked to the Lagoon, close to where fishermen were fishing. Some of the occupants were cooking for the public in that place.

“The water they are using to cook can cause a health hazard. One person operating the toilet was detained.”

“The evictees claimed that they live there because they have no money to rent decent apartments.

“The operation will continue across the state to dislodge illegal occupants of black spots.”
