Nigerian govt moves to decongest prisons, to construct 3000 more

The Federal Government of Nigeria has moved to decongest prisons in the country after it disclosed that plans are underway to construct 3000 capacity building in each of the geopolitical zones across Nigeria.

That much information was revealed by the Minister of Interior, Rtd. Lt. Gen Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau while he was speaking to newsmen in Minna, the Niger State capital.

According to Dambazau, the move will decongest some of the prisons which are already congested while some old prisons would be reconstructed and others would be relocated in order to expand them.

Dambazau also revealed that plans are in the pipeline to also address the problem of manpower in the Nigerian prisons with the recruitment of 6000 personnel to boost the workforce of the Nigerian prisons.

The move is coming months after the House of Representatives decried the level of congestion in prisons across the country which had become so alarming that they no longer served as correctional facilities or reformation centre for inmates.

There have also been a number of prison breaks in some parts of the country over the last few years.
