Partial coal mine collapse in China claims 9 lives

Despite years of trying to deal with the persistence of safety measures in the mining sector, nine lives were again lost when a partial coal mine collapse occurred in northern China.

Reports say the partial collapse occurred when a group of workers were doing maintenance work inside the mine shaft killing nine people in the process while rescuers were able to save one person, who is now in stable condition at a hospital.

Local government officials are said to be mobilising other rescue officials to the scene of the incident as the cause of the accident on the outskirts of Shuozhou city in coal-rich Shanxi province was under investigation.

China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of coal. Its mining industry has long been one of the world’s deadliest, even as the government has strived to improve safety inside the mines and phase out older operations with outdated safety standards.
