Quadri advances in Swedish Open after upsetting World no. 12

Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri caused a major upset at the Swedish Open by beating highly-ranked world no. 12 Wong Chun Ting of Hong Kong in 6 games to advance to round of 16.

Quadri saw off No. 5 seed, Wong 11-4, 15-13, 8-11, 11-8, 10-13, 11-6 to set up a clash with Portuguese star, Freitas Marcos, who also defeated Zhai Yujia from Denmark 4-3.

Ranked 27 in the world, Quadri has been impressive at the ITTF World Tour in Sweden having earlier defeated Kit Kwan Ho in the preliminary stage.

He saw of the Hong Kong star 4-2 (11-6,5-11,11-8, 13-10, 4-11, 11-6) to qualify into the main draw of the men’s singles.

27-year-old Quadri will now face Marcos, 29, on Friday by 4.30pm Nigerian time.

And if he beats Marcos, Quadri will face the winner of the game involving Fan Zhendong from China and Duda Benedikt from Germany on Saturday.
