2019: Hope as Reps reconvene for INEC

There is hope that fears over the 2019 general elections may be nothing after all, as the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters is currently in a meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The budget for the 2019 elections is said to be the main item of the meeting that has the INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmoof Yakubu in attendance.

The committee is chaired by Hon. Aisha Dukku.

It would be recalled that Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara had said both chambers of the National Assembly could not resume to consider the budget of INEC as expected because the relevant committees of both the Senate and House of Representatives have not done their work.

According to the two presiding officials, it would ammount to waste of time to resume when the committees have not done their work.

It is expected that after the meeting, the National Assembly may give a positive response to President Muhammadu Buhari’s request on the INEC budget for the 2019 general elections.

The INEC boss and other commissioners of the electoral body have moved to the Senate for a similar meeting with the Senate Committee on INEC Chaired by Senator Suleiman Nazif.
