‘Big men’ who revel in cruising around with a large number of policemen may now have to find an alternative means as President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Sunday Arase, to prune the number of policemen attached to them.
The president, said those that are affected by pruning should be redeployed to regular police duties, and warned the police boss and the Police Service Commission (PSC) that extortion should not in any way feature in the forthcoming police recruitment.
The President, who spoke during a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Police Affairs and the Police Service Commission at the Villa on Thursday, noted that the practice which has become an emerging culture was totally unacceptable to him.
He insisted that those in charge of recruitment and training in the Police must be above board and eschew every form of extortion and underhand dealing, stressing that he would not accept a situation where jobless Nigerians are extorted.

“You must ensure that the recruitment process is transparent. Those who will conduct the recruitment must be above board. It should not be heard that they receive gratification or extort money from those who want to enlist in the police,” he warned.
The President, however, lamented the stagnation of some policemen on a particular rank for many years and therefore instructed the Police Service Commission to review the current structure of the police, and make recommendations on how the problem can be solved to boost the morale of serving policemen.
The president recently approved the recruitment of 10,000 policemen to boost the security of the nation.
