Flood renders villagers homeless in Delta community

NiMet raises alarm over severe flooding in 11 states

Residents of Otu-Jeremi community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, are not smiling with the rains as many have been rendered homeless, with properties worth millions of naira in floods that have submerged at least 30 houses.

A victim and youth leader in the community, Mr. Sadiq Hitler, who lamented that the community might be wiped out by flood if urgent steps were not taken, appealed to the various tiers of government to come to their aid.

Councilor representing, Jeremi Ward 3 in the local government, Sunday Apah, also appealed to the state and Federal governments to come to the aide of his people.

Apah, who is the chairman of the council’s Committee on Information, Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions in Ughelli South legislative arm, made the appeal during an assessment tour to ascertain the level of damages done to the villagers by the ravaging flood.

He said: “I am surprised at the level of destruction of my constituents’ property. Many of them have been rendered homeless, but as a member of the Ughelli South legislative arm, I will do my best to see how the situation could be managed, pending when help will come from the state and the Federal governments.

“As a local government, we can only do our best because of the meagre resources from the federal government.

“I want to appeal to my people to be patient for a while. They will definitely be taken care of by the government.”
