INEC resumes process for Melaye recall, releases timetable Sept 18

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has restarted the process to recall Senator Dino Melaye and has announced that it is going to release a revised timetable and schedule of activities on September 18, 2017.

INEC national commissioner and member of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mallam Mohammed Haruna, who made this disclosure in a statement on Tuesday, explained that the development was in compliance with the orders of the court.

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday and presided over by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, had dismissed the suit by the senator representing Kogi West senatorial district to stop INEC from proceeding with his recall and ordered that the commission should continue with the process.

Haruna had therefore in the Tuesday statement said, “It will be recalled that in obedience to an interlocutory order of the Federal High Court, Abuja given on 6th July, 2017 the Independent National Electoral Commission stayed all actions relating to the petition to recall Senator Dino Melaye as the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District.

“Judgment in the suit was delivered yesterday, September 11, 2017. All legal hurdles have now been cleared and the recall process can now proceed as envisaged by the constitution, the Electoral Act and the extant INEC guidelines and regulation.

“Accordingly, and in compliance with the orders of the court, the commission will release a revised timetable and schedule of activities on Monday, September 18, 2017.”

The process was suspended after Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court had in an earlier judgment on the matter directed both parties to maintain the status quo until the determination of the suit that Melaye filed to challenge his recall process.

Melaye had blamed Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, INEC and some top Federal Government officials of masterminding the plot to recall him from the Senate.

The government of Kogi State has however denied the claim describing it as “false and misleading.”

Meanwhile, Senator Melaye, has boasted that he is ready for those that are after him.

He made the boast on Instagram page, where he said “I ready for all dem bad people”, while donning combat camouflage attire.
