Italy has carried out its initial threat of taking “immediate and proportionate” action over the murder of PhD student Giulio Regeni by recalling its ambassador to Egypt for consultations over the matter.

The recall of its ambassador is coming after Egyptian officials tendered a brief into investigations on the killing of Regeni to their Italian counterparts.

Moments after the brief was tendered, Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni tweeted (in Italian) saying that Italy wanted “one thing only: the truth about Giulio”.

Rights groups have suggested security forces were to blame, but Egypt says a criminal gang was behind his murder.

Regeni, 28, was found in a ditch on 3 February after he went missing on the 25th of January. The body of the student was found to be mutilated showing signs of severe torture.
