Rivalry: Police stop Kwankwasiyya mass wedding

The rivalry between former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso and his successor, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, assumed a new dimension on Thursday, as the state Police Command banned a scheduled mass wedding organised by a group loyal to Kwankwaso.

The police command announced the ban in a statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Magaji Majiya, in Kano.

The command, in the statement, said the mass wedding orgainised by the Kwankwasiyya movement, was banned because it coincided with an empowerment programme slated for the same day by the state government.

The two events were billed for August 20.

“The police has banned the two ceremonies indefinitely as security Intelligence available at our disposal revealed that some disgruntled elements are preparing to use the occasions to cause havoc in the state”, the statement said.

The police also warned that it would not fold its arms to allow some people to breach the peace in the state.

“Our prime responsibility is to ensure peace, tranquillity, protection of lives and property as well as maintenance of law and order,’’ the statement said, adding that the state Commissioner of Police would invite the organisers of the two events to resolve the issues involved.

The state governor and Kwankwaso have been locked in a battle of supremacy since Ganduje took over from his former boss.
