Russia summons U.S. envoy over illegitimate search of its Washington compound

The ongoing diplomatic spat between Russia and US is reaching fever pitch after Putin summoned a top U.S. envoy in Moscow to issue a note of protest regarding an “illegitimate” search of its closed Washington compound.

According to Russia’s foreign ministry, acting U.S. mission head Anthony Godfrey was handed a “note of protest over the intention of the American authorities to conduct a search.”

24-hours ago, Russia said they’ll respond harshly to any US measures designed to hurt it after Washington told Moscow to close its San Francisco consulate and two other facilities.

The warning came as Russia said it was weighing a response to the US move that will force it to shut its San Francisco consulate, as well as its trade missions in Washington, DC and New York City.

The spat between the two nuclear-armed powers is another blow to US President Donald Trump’s pledge to try to improve relations with Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
