Exclusive! Senate, Presidency in fresh row over $200m loan request for EFCC

The Senate, on Monday, failed to confirm or outrightly deny claims that President Muhammadu Buhari has re-forwarded the name of the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for confirmation as the substantive head of the anti-graft agency.

Senate spokesperson, Sen Aliyu Sabi in a telephone interview with Ripples Nigeria, said he was not at liberty to confirm or deny receipt of any official communication from the President regarding the embattled acting EFCC boss, Magu.

Magu was rejected by the Senate on the 15th of December, 2016. The Senate based its decision on a report submitted to it by the Department of State Services (DSS).

There are currently reports, making rounds that Magu’s name may have been resubmitted to the Senate by Buhari, despite strong opposition from a large number of Senators.

Sabi said: “I have nothing to claim or deny. You already know how these things are done. Whenever there is any communication from the President, it will be read on the floor of the Senate. Why can’t Nigerians just wait and see if there is anything like that?

“The media is unfair to us. They must understand that we have our own way of doing things, but they always want to push us to say the wrong thing. I have nothing to say on this issue again.”

Immediate-past Leader of the Senate, Senator Ali Ndume, who was one of the key lawmakers who lobbied on behalf of Magu, was sacked a fortnight ago by members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus in the Red Chamber.

Ndume was replaced by Senator Ahmed Lawan, who has since assumed duties in the Red Chamber.

I think it will be so stupid of Buhari to resubmit Magu’s name for reconfirmation despite the corruption records of Magu DSS revealed to the senate. Buhari must definbitely have another agenda he wants to use Magu for if truly resubmitted his name for confirmation.

This man has won president Buhari’s heart to the extent that he insists resending his name again to the senate for confirmation. Senate has no choice than to confirm him

I hope the senate will do justice by insisting on not having Magu as EFCC head. It is unspeakable that Mr President still wants Magu after senate’s disapproval and the unveiling of his corrupt practices

We all know no man is clean, Magu really made impacts in EFCC, but he’s definitely not the right person to head the anti-graft agency. The DSS report which the senate found to be accurate is enough to terminate Magu’s appointment. If Buhari can provide proofs that DSS was wrong about the their claims against Magun, then it will be reasonable. If not, Buhari should just provide someone else.

Ibrahim Magu is my distant cousin. I know him so much that he can not even steal a penny nor talking of engaging in corruption. He shuns corruption with passion. I have to say this because some of you see him as a corrupt man. He deserves to be the efcc boss at all cost

You are a fool , so do we expect you to talk ill of your distant cousin as you claimed.
We know buhari’s idea, he knew the senate might still insisted on Magu’s rejection there by they will keep adjourning their sittings until 2018 again and by then election things will be on point, so no one would have time to reject anyone by then as they are all busy to recontest to win. So magu will surely end his tenure as efcc boss in buhari’s first tenure systematically.
