Spain are World Cup favourites - Diego Costa

Following Spain’s 6-1 victory over two-time world champions, Argentina, Diego Costa believes the European giants should think of themselves as ‘favourites’ for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The Atletico Madrid striker opened the scoring at his home stadium – as he made his first international start in over nine months.

Real Madrid star, Isco scored a hat-trick. Thiago Alcantara and Iago Aspas were Spain’s other scorers while Nicolas Otamendi netted for the visitors.

“With the players that we have, we cannot say that Spain are not favourites,” Costa told Cadena Cope on Tuesday night.

“I want to be on the plane and will be trying everything to make it, but we have a lot of strikers pushing for places.

“We are the four (Costa, Rodrigo, Aspas and Morata) but maybe we all cannot go, but I want to help my country and it’s nice to play.

“Tonight’s result might be a little misleading as when Messi is not playing, it makes a difference but we were strong and we are happy.”

Spain are now unbeaten in 18 games since Julen Lopetegui took charge following their exit at the first knockout stage of Euro 2016.

They have been drawn alongside Iran, Morocco and Portugal at this summer’s World Cup.
