US accuses Russia of helping Syria to violate rule on use of chemical weapons

The United States has accused Russia of violating a rule to halt Syria’s use of chemical weapons after the war-torn country signed the international ban on chemical weapons in 2013.

According to Robert Wood, U.S. disarmament ambassador, Syria is violating the chemical weapons convention it signed in 2013, and that Moscow had “clearly been in violation” of its commitment to act as a “guarantor” of Syria’s behaviour.

The United States said it has evidence that Syria has used chlorine gas in attacks in recent weeks. Rescue workers and medics on the ground have described residents choking on fumes after air strikes.

The accusations are coming hours after a US media report citing findings by United Nations experts revealed that North Korea has been sending equipment to Syria that could be used in chemical weapons manufacturing.

The New York Times informs that an unreleased UN report reveals that Pyongyang’s missile specialists have been seen at Syrian weapon-making facilities supplying materials include acid-resistant tiles, valves and pipes.
