CORONAVIRUS: WHO declares outbreak a global emergency as death toll in China rises to 213

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned of an impending yellow fever outbreak in Ethiopia after the number of suspected cases in the country increased from three reported on March 3, to 85 on April 6.

Reports say vaccination has since been reactivated but WHO is concerned about the outbreak in cases with no travel history especially as eight more suspected cases have tested positive.

“The risk at national level is assessed as high. The current outbreak in the Gurage Zone, SNNP region shows rapid amplification of a yellow fever outbreak in a rural area.

“In the context of virtually no population immunity, the high number of suspect cases reported over a short time period is of high concern,” WHO added.

Ethiopia has been running yellow fever vaccination programmes targeting people living in hotspots.
