More worries for Facebook as Londoners dump social network

These are certainly not the best of times for social media giants Facebook as scores of Londoners are joining in on the ‘#DeleteFacebook’ bandwagon.

Reports say scores of young users of the social media network in London have started deleting the Facebook app over the issue of safety of personal details.

Lewis Tavernier, 24, a sport science student at London Metropolitan University, says he was “uncomfortable” with the amount of personal information Facebook was acquiring from him.

“But I knew I was just unknowingly signing away so much information about myself – what I like, where I’ve been, who I know.

“I don’t personally feel my politics were influenced by what I saw on there…but I definitely know a few people whose views have been shaped by it.

“As a student, it feels crucial to have every form of social media going and to never miss out but I just didn’t think it was worth it.

Facebook has experienced a tumultuous week following news of the Cambridge Analytica data leak.

Allegations emerged that the data firm had harvested personal details from more than 50 million Facebook users to help swing Donald Trump’s 2016 US triumph and potentially the vote for Brexit.
