WTTC 2018: Nigeria’s Table Tennis team advance to Round 16, to face Spain

Nigeria’s table tennis team successfully made it to the knockout stages of the ongoing World Team Table Tennis Championships holding in Halmstad, Sweden.

The team, comprising of Aruna Quadri, Abiodun Bode, Segun Toriola and Olajide Omotayo, have been impressive in the competition as they only lost once in the group stages.

They defeated Argentina 3-1 in their opening match, thrashed Turkey 3-0 before falling 3-1 to Slovakia.

The team bounced back in their fourth game against Bulgaria as they recorded their third win with 3-0 to boost their chance of qualifying for the next round.

Then on Wednesday night, the Nigerian team defeated Australia 3-0 in their final Men’s Division 2 Group F game to finish second behind group winners Slovakia.

Aruna beat Benjamin Bould in three straight sets in the first game; Bode also won against Townsend Kane in three straight sets; before Olajide beat Rohan Dhooria 3-2 to seal the win.

Nigeria will now take on Spain later today (Thursday) at 6pm in a round 16 clash.

The winner of the clash will take on Slovakia who got a bye to the quarter-finals.
