11 dead, 6 missing after severe floods sweep through Sri Lanka

At least 11 people were left dead and six others declared missing after severe floods swept through the Asian country of Sri Lanka.

According to local authorities the floods and landslides were caused by heavy storms which have been on for the last three days without abating.

About nine people were injured and most of the recorded deaths were attributed to landslides and electrocution with the Disaster Management Centre informing that 114 homes have been destroyed and more than 137,000 people have been evacuated to safe locations as the storm continues.

Rescue operatives are leaving no stones unturned in a bid to save lives with Navy spokesman Akram Alavi revealing that 24 teams have been deployed across the island nation to rescue people marooned in the floods and evacuate those living in threatened areas.

Alavi revealed that about 45 more sailors were on standby for any emergency much so as the Meteorological Department has warned of more rain, rough seas and strong winds in most parts of the country.
