ABIA: All 17 local chapter chairmen of SDP suspended for ‘anti-party activity’

Abia’s Social Democratic Party (SDP) 17 local chapter chairmen who dumped their party’s gubernatorial candidate to adopt Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as their candidate for the governorship polls have been suspended.

The State Working Committee of the SDP suspended the 17 chairmen of its local government chapters for alleged anti-party activity.

Chairman of the party, Chief Chidi Nwosu, while speaking, on Wednesday, to newsmen on the suspension, said the party also set up a seven-member panel to “further investigate appropriately the actions of the chairmen.”

Spokesman of the 17 SDP LGA chairmen, Chijioke Ozems, had on Tuesday announced their adoption of Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He explained that their adoption was based on the need to have peace in the state, which according to him, can only be achieved if equity is maintained by allowing Ikpeazu to finish his second term.

The spokesman went on to advise their party’s (SDP) governorship candidate, Dr. Blessing Nwagba, to drop her ambition and step down from the race.

The SDP Working Committee had immediately dissociated itself from the purported adoption, saying that the action of the chairmen did not represent the position of the party.

Nwosu said, “The chairmen took the unilateral decision, contrary to the position of our party at the national and state chapter, which amounted to anti-party activity.”

He alleged that the chairmen “were making frivolous financial demands from governorship candidates and may have found who to satisfy their quest for money.”

According to him, “The chairmen have placed personal interest above and higher than the interest of Abia people by considering financial gains from another political party against our great party.”
