Presidency hails Onnoghen's conviction

The Court of Appeal, Abuja, on Monday, acquitted a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, of a false asset declaration charge.

Onnoghen was convicted for false asset declaration by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) on April 18, 2019.

He was later asked to proceed on retirement by former President Muhammadu Buhari following the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC).

At Monday’s proceeding, a panel of appellate court led by Justice Abba Mohammed adopted the terms of settlement between the Federal Government and the ex-CJN.

This resolution also led to the return of Onnoghen’s four previously forfeited bank accounts.

The former CJN’s counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), thanked President Bola Tinubu and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), for facilitating the resolution.

“We thank President Tinubu and the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, for ensuring the resolution of this issue,” he stated.
