Army beckons on Boko Haram to embrace Buhari’s amnesty

Nigerian Army on Thursday called on Boko Haram terrorists to repent and embrace President Muhammadu Buhari’s amnesty offer in order to escape being killed.

The Federal Government’s readiness to grant amnesty to the terrorist group has remained a vexed issue, with many Nigerians condemning it since Buhari made the offer on March 23.

But in a statement on Thursday, Brig.-Gen. Texas Chukwu, Director, Army Public Relations, urged the insurgent group to lay down their arms for the amnesty offer.

He said, “We wish to remind repentant Boko Haram fighters that the window of opportunity to embrace the Federal Government Amnesty programme is still open for them to surrender and lay down their weapons.

“It is also gratifying to report that the troops’ morale remains high as they dominate the general area with a robust fighting patrol in continuation with the clearance operations.”

The army spokesman then disclosed that the troops of 23 Brigade under the Operation Lafiya Dole had arrested three suspected Boko Haram terrorists at Ngurore on March 28.

According to him, one of the suspects, who got wounded as a result of gunshots, confessed to have participated in various attacks coordinated by the insurgents.

He said that the army is now conducting preliminary investigations with the 23 Brigade Provost Company.

He further commended members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) for patriotism, resilience and cooperation with troops, calling on members of the public to emulate them.
