Melaye arraigned in court again for attempted suicide

Kogi State High Court on Tuesday gave its ruling on the case of assassination attempt on Senator Dino Melaye.

The court in its ruling freed all the persons accused of attempting to assassinate the senator of criminal charges leveled against them.

Among the accused persons are the chairman, Association of Local Government of Nigeria, Taofiq Isa, Ade Obege, Abdullahi Isah, Michael Bamidele and Ahmed Ajayi.

Melaye, who represents Kogi West senatorial district in the National Assembly had in April 2017, approached the court alleging an assassination attempt on his life by the defendants.

However, ruling on the matter on Tuesday, the trial judge, Justice Fola Ajayi, struck out the assassination case on the grounds of want of diligent prosecution.

The judge said that despite four adjournments in the matter, that the prosecution was not able to call witnesses to testify against the accused persons.

Nevertheless, Justice Ajayi gave a consequential order for the prosecution to start their case afresh whenever they are ready.

Recall that the Nigeria Police, Kogi State command had claimed that Senator Melaye’s claim of attemp on his life was false. The matter is among the many other charges the embattled senator is currently being prosecuted for by the police.
