British troops join fight to retake Helmand from Taliban

The fight to retake Helmand- a key town in Afghanistan from Taliban forces has intensified following the deployment of British troops to help reclaim the town.

It marks the first return of British troops to the restive province since last year with troop deployment including at least one SAS unit of around 30 soldiers who will operate alongside American special forces and the Afghan National Army.

It could be recalled that The town of Sangin and its surrounding hills in the opium-growing heartlands of Helmand province was the scene of some of Britain’s heaviest losses in Afghanistan.

There were 106 British casualties as the Army fought to keep Sangin out of the hands of the Taliban from 2006 to 2010, when responsibility for the area was handed over to the Americans.
