Buhari’s govt reinstated Maina, gave him DSS protection- Family claims

Published

The last may not have been heard of how Abdulrasheed Maina, the former Pensions boss, was actually reinstated into the civil service as the family on Wednesday accused President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government of being behind his reinstatement.

The family alleged that their son decided to return and serve his fatherland after much pleading by Buhari’s administration which provided him protection with the Department of State Services (DSS).

The spokesperson for the Maina family, Aliyu, who stated this at a news conference in Kaduna, noted that the Federal Government reinstated Maina because he was a messiah that reformed the pension scheme.

Aliyu, who wondered why the Federal Government is now denying their son, refuted claims that Maina is a fraudster. According to him, a “cabal” is the mastermind of Maina’s present travails.

“It is on record that Abdulrasheed Maina’s reform put to a stop the fraudulent withdrawal of huge sums from both the Nigerian Pension Board, the Nigerian Police Pension Board, etc. Perhaps it is his noble efforts that made him enviable to the present administration when they came into power to convince him to come back and assist in its ‘Change’ agenda.

“Abdulrasheed was in fact invited by this administration and he was promised security to come and clean up the mess and generate more revenue to government by blocking leakages.

“He succumbed to the present administration and came back to Nigeria. He has been working with the DSS for quite some time and he was given necessary security.

“There is a letter from the Attorney-General of the Federation where he gave his own legal opinion regarding the court verdict which was submitted to the Civil Service Commission and the head of service respectively. So, one wonders why all the agencies and various individuals responsible for his return are now denying.

“As you know, Maina had been a target in the past, so experience is the best teacher. But when his security is guaranteed, he will surface from wherever he is and tell Nigerians the truth.

“All the same, we have contacted our solicitors, Messrs Mamman Nasir & Co and instructed them to act appropriately. We equally know that Abdulrasheed Maina is in possession of so many facts that are against the cabal and interesting to the Nigerian populace, which he will disclose soonest. One must ask whether it is an offence for somebody to serve his fatherland,” Aliyu said.

Maina, a former chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, was in 2013 accused of N2.1 billion pension fraud and has been on EFCC wanted list.

The AGF, Abubakar Malami, who has been indicted for his reinstatement was quoted saying on Tuesday that he acted in public interest to reinstate Maina. He has promised to explain what happened when he appears before Senate summon soon.

Maina is indeed “a messiah that reformed the pension scheme”! This man is nothing but a thieve that looted all kept in his possession. It is however surprising this allegation against the federal government came up, I’m surprised!

There are more to this Maina’s issue, if this revelations from his family are lies, Aliyu won’t be so confident to speak at news conference. Buhari really needs to dig deeper to understand Maina’s case. We need to be sure if Maina was set up by some cabals as claimed or not
