The Nigerian Army has compulsorily retired Brigadier General Aliyu Momoh over his role in 2014 Ekiti State governorship election.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan Ali, in an interview in Washington, DC.

According to the minister, the army decided to initiate the process of rusticating General Momoh, who was indicted last year by a military panel.

General Momoh was accused of leading a contingent of soldiers and other security agencies, to Ekiti State and reportedly intimidated voters and hindered the movement of officials of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

This was said to be part of a strategy allegedly approved by former President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure the then candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Governor Ayodele Fayose defeated the then incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi.

As part of the strategy, Senator Musliu Obanikoro, then the Minister of State for Defence, was allegedly the conduit who transferred huge sums of money for the election.

The compulsory retirement of General Momoh was confirmed by the spokesman of the Army, Col. Sani Usman.
